I was tasked by Remi to design and colour backgrounds with a red colour pallet and go for a old cartoon network design with shard angles and no hard black outlines i was also task with doing it in two point perceptive

1 /12/19

After spending a couple of days researching and drawing I finally finished the back ground design so below for the porcess

My next scene

the next scene i was tasked to do was the axe falling to the side scene. When doing this scene i wanted to add bit of a shine to the axe to make it bit more imposing which i did i used already drawn backgrounds . One issue that did raise was i was unable to get the rigs that Sean made to download. This cause some slight issues as then i had to draw Evan out buy hand that was time consuming but just if i was able to download the rig it would of saved myself abit of time I downloaded the character sheet and use the toonboom dropper tool to make sure I had the the exact colours i needed from Evan just to make sure that continuity was correct . Next i had to scale up the back ground to make sure I got the portions correct. Then I had to pick a good a good area of the house to use .

My next scene

house zoom in

the next scene i was tasked with was panning into the house from the outside in . Firstly i looked at the animatic to see what the directors wanted to give me a better sense of what to do i look at many of my reference already listed in my style reference . I looked at Johnny Bravo to give me a rough idea of the outside . After designing the outside i put one of my ideas on the wall that the client said would work better as a background piece rather than a gag which I did .

Next since Remi already did the exterior of the house i wanted to make sure that the continuity so i downloaded his image and use the toonboom paint dropper tool to make sure that the colours 100 % match after that i used darker and brighter shades of the house base to create a stone effect. Just make the piece look less flat

then i added the poster mentioned earlier and it was very flat so i wanted to add the effect of it gently blowing in the wind I did this by using a simply rig . I wanted to do the same for the tree so i drew up the piece and added a 5 point rig to it and had it gently swaying back and forward like it was blowing in the wind.

after the drawings where complete it was time for the tricky part of the whole process getting the camera to soon in the window . Firstly i had to make every layer a 3D layer to start of with to get the desired effect i wanted . The real problem began when i zoomed in through the window since i was working with 2 flat planes not boxes it was very clear that the planes where just floating there . So what i did was use the paint dropper tool to copy the exact colour of the floor and the ceiling and then i made those planes into 3D objects and built a box inside toonboom .

AXE SWINGING SCENE

Next i was task with was the axe swinging scene . Since this scene is quick vibrant and dynamic I knew straight away that i had to do it in frame by frame animation. of course i started with a rough animation underneath just to see if it was playing well and once i thought it was i moved forward onto the clean up

before cleaning up the animation i needed to go back to the original animatic to see how the directors wanted it and i found they wanted a comic book esc style character with a read back drop . I kept the character very simple much like the original i gave him glowing white eyes and a muscular build .

In the feed back the client wanted the swing to be quicker so i speed up the animation to 30 fps and it really adds to the piece to feel viscous as its over in a blink of an eye. After i finished drawing the piece i went back over every frame and drew in every single shadow to give him a more dynamic look .

I exported the movie and notices some flaws with the piece so i open back up the folder and retouch some of the scene just so it doesn’t look sloppy. During the process the imagines seem to be kind of jumping about a bit as frames didn’t quite match up with the ones after it . It was a matter of fixing the scale and messing around with the positions until I was happy .

Bloody body scene

the headless body of the axe swing was my scene I wanted this scene to be as fluid as possible so I drew each frame by hand . but I started off with a rough sketch underneath just how I know that the animation is right before I start to add all the other details.

After I thought the animation was good enough to start adding details I went back to the animation and making sure I was hitting all the key poses . After that I went over the animation cleaning it up but I didn’t add hands in at this stage I just felt more comfortable adding them on top later on

the last thing I added was the blood I wanted this to be a bit more chaotic so I didn’t use a amination sketch underneath and I did this by frame by frame over the whole piece .

Evan upset

My last scene is Evan is upset about how he doesn’t even know the people who want him dead this for me was by far the most challenging scene to accomplish as I neither use rig and I never lip – synch ever the rigs where well made which help me out a lot I just had trouble controlling there arms and legs there mouths where very awkward to get but once I did there was no issues from there after the animation was complete quickly designed some backgrounds to put in .
